More information on the Commodore Perry Flag

In 1852, President Millard Fillmore sent a naval expedition to Japan to open up trade with the East. The success of the stubborn "commodore" Matthew Perry allowed the U.S. to establish a treaty with Japan and become a major sea power. The words on his flag were to become important to future American naval forces.

The flag is a wonderfull piece of American History. But you have attributed it to the wrong "Perry". This was the battle flag Commodore Oliver " Hazzard" Perry flew over his ship " The Lawrence" in the Battle of Lake Erie. The Lawrence, named after Perry's long time friend ..Captain James Lawrence. Captain Lawrences dying words were " DON'T GIVE UP THE SHIP " . A fitting tribute for a loyal soldier !
