The Culpeper minutemen of Virginia used this pattern in 1775 in the Battle of the Great Bridge at Norfolk, Virginia on December 9, 1775. The Culpeper men were part of the First Virginia Regiment, led by Colonel Patrick Henry, who is well known for his statement, "Give me liberty or give me death!".
