Edward Teach or Blackbeard’s pirate flag is generally flown to intimidate others. It features a devil skeleton holding an hourglass in one hand and a spear in the other hand standing beside a bleeding heart. The skeleton and hour glass signifies that the victim’s time is running out. The spear and heart represent the mercy that would be shown if the prey would surrender without a fight.

Blackbeard (Edward Teach) is one of the most well known pirates to have ever lived. He was an English Pirate that operated within the West Indies and the first American colonies in the 1700’s. He was a notorious but feared man who obviously got his nickname from his black beard. Blackbeard mainly pirated the West Indies and the Caribbean up the coast to the Carolinas. He would join up with cohorts along the way doubling his ships and weapons. Together they would attack ships and take their supplies becoming stronger with every attack.

In the spring of 1718 Blackbeard formed a blockade in Charleston, South Carolina. For one week he stayed there attacking every ship, steeling all of the goods going in and coming out of the port. He then headed north where he turned on his fellow pirates. He attacked them, stole their gold and abandoned them on a sandbar. He sailed to the Outer Banks of North Carolina where he settled down with his fortune. The terror of Blackbeard was well known and it had to be stopped. In November of 1718, Governor Spotswood of Virginia decided to put an end to it. He sent the Royal Navy into North Carolina where a bloody battle ensued. Blackbeard would never go down without a fight. It is reported that he received five musket ball wounds and 20 sword lacerations before dying in the Ocracoke inlet. His head was then severed and hung off the front of a ship for others to see, showing in fact that the feared pirate was dead.

Many of Blackbeard’s friends and cohorts where held on trial and hanged in Wilmington and Charleston. But no pirate was ever as feared as Blackbeard. During his pirating career he had captured over 50 ships, his death marked the end of the pirating era in the New World. To this day Blackbeard is well known, especially on the coast of the Carolina’s. There are still stories told of his treasures buried on the Outer Banks.
