More information on the Fort Moultrie Flag
Early in the American Revolution, the colonists were often defending their positions against greater British forces. By March of 1776, William Moultrie had built a small fort on Sullivan's Island in the harbor before Charleston to defend that city against British attack. He was successful and the fort was later named after him. The current flag of South Carolina is based on this design. |
